Battle of Hampton Roads Commemoration Day
Saturday, March 8th, 2025 at 10:30
Mariners Museum (meet near the guest services desk at the front entrance)
100 Museum Drive
Newport News, VA 23606
Join us for a special presentation of artifacts and the USS Monitor exhibits, to include a limited time viewing of the original turret in open air! This is the 50th anniversary of the wreck site being named a national maritime sanctuary. A lecture will be held at noon in the Explorers Theatre, to be presented by Director Emeritus of the USS Monitor Center John V. Quarstein. Space is limited for the lecture, and we need to expediently sound off our attendance for those that are interested. Camp members that attend will also be entered into a raffle for a donated, author-endorsed copy of The Crucible of Command: Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee - The War They Fought, The Peace They Forged, written by William C. Davis. Please RSVP to Junior Vice Commander P. Chamberlain Russell at the soonest opportunity to confirm your attendance. When you RSVP, please also indicate your interest in meeting with camp members for lunch at Harpoon Larry's after the event.
On a belated note, please accept this honorable mention of the recent 160th anniversary for the signing of the 13th Amendment on January 31st, 1865. This momentous legislation in American history abolished slavery forevermore, and was among the final signature achievements of President Lincoln's administration before he was assassinated less than three month later.
